Kaunia is an administrative area within Barisal District, Bangladesh. Kaunia Thana was formed in 2007, comprising 6 wards from Barisal City Corporation and three unions—Charbaria, Char Monai, and Shayestabad—of Barisal Sadar Upazila. Covering an area of approximately 111.16 square kilometers, Kaunia is a key part of the larger Barisal metropolitan region. Barisal District itself has a deep historical context, originally known as Bakerganj district, established in 1797. The region played an important role historically as part of various Bengal empires and sultanates before becoming a significant district in British India and then modern Bangladesh.
