Nirmalendu Goon (born 21 June 1945) is a celebrated Bangladeshi poet, essayist, novelist, and painter well-known for his accessible and socially conscious poetry. He is regarded as one of the leading poets of Bangladesh who has vividly portrayed themes of love, social justice, class struggle, and anti-autocracy in his works.

Early Life and Education

Goon was born in Kasban village, Barhatta Upazila in Netrokona district, Bangladesh. He had an early passion for literature and poetry. He passed his matriculation examination from school with first division in 1962 and continued his higher secondary education from Netrokona College. Later, he completed his bachelor’s degree in 1969. His first poem, Notun Kandari, was published in the magazine Uttor Akash while he was still a student, marking the beginning of a distinguished literary career.

Career

Nirmalendu Goon’s poetic journey began in the 1960s, and since then he has published more than 45 collections of poetry and a similar number of prose works, including travelogues and essays. His poems often express deep concern for the oppressed masses, highlighting the struggles against dictatorship and advocating human dignity, freedom, and equality. A committed Marxist, Goon has been vocal in his criticism of socio-political injustices and has also written poems commemorating notable figures like Rabindranath Tagore, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and Lenin.

His famous poem Huliya (The Warrant) inspired a graphic film by Tanvir Mokammel, reflecting his cultural impact beyond literature. Goon has been honored with major national awards throughout his career.
