Shahnewaz Kakoli is a notable Bangladeshi filmmaker, playwright, and television director known for her impactful contributions to film, stage, and television. She made her directorial debut with the film Uttarer Sur (Northern Symphony) in 2012, which gained international recognition, being screened at film festivals including the Goa International Film Festival, Kolkata International Film Festival, and Mumbai’s Third Eye Film Festival. The film depicts the life of a street singer and her daughter, exploring themes of survival and social reality. Uttarer Sur won three Bangladesh National Film Awards, highlighting its critical acclaim.​

Before her work in film, Kakoli directed several telefilms and stage plays, showcasing her versatility. She is also a painter and an artist inspired by legendary filmmaker Ritwik Ghatak, whose cinematic style influenced her storytelling. Other notable films by Kakoli include Nodijon (2015) and Jolrong. She has also directed numerous telefilms, blending artistic narrative with social commentary.

In recent times, Shahnewaz Kakoli has faced health challenges, including suffering an ischemic stroke in October 2025, for which she has been receiving treatment and rehabilitation.
