The Department of Fisheries (DoF) of Bangladesh is the primary government agency responsible for fisheries development, management, and conservation in the country. It operates under the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock and plays a key role in sustainable utilization of fisheries resources to ensure food security and support livelihoods.

Structure and Organization

  • Headed by a Director General with support from several Directors and Principal Scientific Officers.

  • Supported by about 1553 technical officers and staff at different levels.

  • Administrative presence at divisional, district, and Upazila (sub-district) levels with Deputy Directors, District Fisheries Officers, and Senior/Upazila Fisheries Officers.

  • Includes specialized units like Marine Fisheries Station, Fisheries Training Academy, Fisheries Training and Extension Centers, Fish Hatcheries, and Fish Inspection and Quality Control Stations.

Functions and Mandate

  • Develops, formulates, and implements projects and programs for judicious and sustainable use of fishery resources.

  • Focuses on managing inland and marine fisheries through regulation, monitoring, and community participation.

  • Engages in habitat conservation, fish stock assessment, aquaculture development, and fisheries resource surveys.

  • Implements marine fisheries management divided into artisanal, mechanized commercial, and industrial trawl sectors.

  • Coordinates skill development through a dedicated Training Wing and strengthens human resource capacity.

  • Collaborates with local government, fishermen’s organizations, research institutes, and NGOs for fisheries regulation and community awareness.

  • Enforces fishing regulations including certified boat licensing, ban of destructive gear, sanctuaries, and banned fishing seasons.

  • Facilitates credit schemes and alternative income-generating activities to reduce fishing pressure.

The Department of Fisheries is essential in balancing ecological sustainability with the socio-economic needs of a nation highly dependent on fisheries, contributing significantly to Bangladesh’s food security and sustainable development.
