The Zoological Society of Bangladesh (ZSB) is the oldest scientific society in Bangladesh, established in 1972 shortly after the country’s independence. It is a non-political academic association dedicated to advancing the science of zoology in all its branches, both pure and applied. The society was founded by 53 zoologists from various institutions during a convention held on February 12, 1972, and formally inaugurated on April 16, 1972.

The main objectives of ZSB are to promote zoological research, education, and scientific exchange in Bangladesh. It coordinates activities such as national and international conferences, seminars, and symposiums. The society publishes the biannual “Bangladesh Journal of Zoology” in English and a popular Bangla newsletter called “Shankhacheel.” Additionally, ZSB organizes the Zoology Olympiad in Bangladesh to foster interest among students in biodiversity and ecosystem preservation.

The society’s office is located at the Department of Zoology, University of Dhaka. It has an elected council of 24 members, including a President, Vice-Presidents, General Secretary, and Regional Secretaries. Membership is open to any interested science graduate, with current membership around 2,500, including life members and fellows.

ZSB receives support from the Government of Bangladesh through the Ministries of Education and Science & Technology and has established a trust fund to sustain its activities.

Prominent activities include publishing scientific journals, organizing seminars and conferences, and contributing to national zoological research and policy. The society also contributed to publishing key works such as the book “Freshwater Fishes of Bangladesh” by A.K. Ataur Rahman. The current president is Prof. Dr. Hamida Khatun.
